Rome--The Eternal City

I never thought I would have had the chance to go back to Rome, Italy, but a BIG thank you to my mother-in-law, Leslie, who was able to make it happen!  We landed in Rome on Monday, June 8, 2015 and expected extreme heat like last year (100+ degrees).  However, even though it was still hot, it was not "melt your feet to the streets" hot.  This year we stayed at a wonderful boutique hotel called Marcella Royal Hotel located in a non-touristy area of Rome, which was wonderful for dinner and gelato (I'll explain that later).

By the time we got to our hotel from the airport it was 1:00 p.m.  We unpacked our things and walked to a local restaurant where we quickly realized that we were the only non-locals inside and had a delicious lunch that included a classic Margherita pizza and a glass of rose for me.  After lunch we walked to Piazza Barberini, which is a large piazza in the center of the city where we each had our first gelato and took in the views for our first day.

{Sorry-- I got a really excited to eat prior to taking the pic!}

Since everyone was exhausted from the day's travel, we walked back to the hotel and took a much needed nap.  Once we woke up later that evening none of us had much of an appetite due to the big lunch earlier in the day, so we decided to go up to the hotel's rooftop bar that had spectacular views of  Vatican  City. We all ordered a few small plates and several glasses of wine (Richard had his Italian beer) and enjoyed our first night in Rome.
